If you’re preparing for AWS certifications or working with cloud services, you’ve probably noticed that some services start with Amazon while others start with AWS. Here’s the simple rule:

Services that start with “Amazon”

These are higher-level, customer-facing or application-level cloud services.

Examples:

  • Amazon EC2

  • Amazon S3

  • Amazon RDS

  • Amazon DynamoDB

  • Amazon CloudFront

  • Amazon VPC

  • Amazon SageMaker

  • Amazon Lex

  • Amazon Polly

Services that start with “AWS”

These are foundational, infrastructure, security, or management services.

Examples:

  • AWS IAM

  • AWS Lambda

  • AWS Glue

  • AWS Backup

  • AWS WAF

  • AWS Shield

  • AWS Organizations

  • AWS CloudFormation

  • AWS CodePipeline

🧠 Easy Way to Remember

  • If it feels like a product → it starts with Amazon

  • If it feels like infrastructure, security, governance, or deployment → it starts with AWS
